***UPDATE*** The University of Alabama and Mark Gottfried released a statement Monday afternoon saying the ‘Bama head basketball coach has resigned (Earlier reports indicated that he was fired). Puh-TAY-to/Puh-TAH-to…he’s out.
Assistant Philip Pearson will coach the Tide for the remainder of the season. Alabama plays next on Jan. 29th – at Arkansas.
Mal and I sat down today, and we talked. At that point, I notified him of my intention to resign as head coach of the men’s basketball program…I love the University of Alabama, but I feel that it is in the best interests of everyone involved.

Alabama has fired head basketball coach Mark Gottfried has resigned after almost 11 seasons, according to Cecil Hurt of Tide Sports/Tuscaloosa News. Gottfried, who played for UA, was 210-131 overall and 83-82 in SEC play as head coach in Tuscaloosa. Under him, the Crimson Tide won the SEC West twice (’01-’02 and ’04-’05) and the entire SEC once (’01-’02). His most memorable season came during 2003-2004 when the Tide reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament.
